On the 25th Anniversary of Super Smash Bros, fans have agreed that it still has the potential of being ‘THE GAME’. The game first came out in 1999 for the Nintendo 64. It became even more popular with the release of Super Smash Bros. Melee in 2001 for the GameCube, which became the best-selling game for that system. The third game, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, came out in 2008 for the Wii. Unlike the first two games developed by HAL Laboratory, the third one was a collaboration of several companies.
The fourth game, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, was released in 2014. The 3DS version was the first one for a handheld console. The fifth and latest installment, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, came out in 2018 for the Nintendo Switch.
Super Smash Bros has changed a lot since it first came out. A couple of people, with Masahiro Sakurai leading the way, came up with the idea. At first, they wanted to use characters from other companies, but it seemed tricky with so many popular fighting games around. So, they decided to use Nintendo characters instead. The first version of the game had just 12 playable characters. But as the series continued, more characters were added to each new game. Eventually, third-party characters joined the roster, and in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, you can play with every character from the previous games.
